I am back in the process of looking for work. One of the things I do in between sub jobs and teaching gigs is make new lines of product for my etsy shops. I have been working on more hair falls and renewing old posts. I have also been fortunate enough to team up with some also local craftspeople. Networking is good.

I would like to introduce to you the team of Wire and Brimstone

Bitten by the rubber band bug

So working with kids I have seen an awful lot of the stretchy rubber band bracelets. I myself became intrigued by this new fashion phenomenon. I had also recently decided I wanted to learn crochet so I already had purchased some various sizes of crochet hooks. So I got some little elastic hair bands and experimented with those first. Then I learned from my mom how to use the band on a four peg spool knitter.

I used YouTube tutorials for making a dragon scale bracelet on a fork. Then I caved in,I bought myself a loom for the more advanced bracelets.

I have totally been bitten by the rubber band "bug". I love it ! Until recently I have been making the bracelets for the kids I work with in the after school program.I have been  giving them bracelets as incentive. we have also been making them as projects once a week. I have just started to post rubber band related items to my etsy shops.  I combined my love of making tassels with them and made some earrings for my tribal trends shop.
This weekend I also learned three new variations on the "triple single" rainbow loom bracelet. I will begin posting some of my bracelets and the new charms I made with polymer clay for the bracelets on my sculptresslink etsy shop today.

So many snowman so little time

So I have not always been the biggest snow man fan. I know some people are all about the little guys but in the past  I was not as affected by the snowman craze. This year I have been bitten by a snowman bug it seems.

I have been making a lot of snowman projects. I have created snowman earrings with polymer clay and  we be making many different snowman projects with the students in the after school program.
In the classroom while subbing I have also carried over this snowman craze of mine.

In the classroom student have been painting simple white outlines on blue construction paper to make snowman collages with.  They paint the snowman first then later glue on the button and precut construction paper hats and noses and foil paper scarfs.

We  have also been making snowman collages with students and using a template I found on Big Activities.Their is even a great step by step with visuals directions page you can print out.

The results vary and although the worksheets are identical students have unique perspectives on how their finished snow person will look.

So when you are teaching projects on snowmen you have to have some snowman earrings. These are easy to make but if you would like a pair to wear without the time it takes to make them you can order a custom made pair on my sculptresslink etsy shop.

I even made a snowman math activity for the after school program.
this is from an old curriculum guide I had. To do this first make copies of the snowmen, then cut them out color them in and write math problems on their bellies then glue sticks to them and write the answers on the bottom of the sticks. Then decorate a shallow box and put holes in the top to hold the sticks and the box will conceal the answers,

Valentine's day it coming

So I have been working on some new valentines day merchandise.

I have been decorating around my house... with Valentines day themed items. I admit in the past I called it "Hallmark holiday" I still think it exists largely as a commerical plea but if we make and give handmade items for valentines day this year then love wins and not companies who make in mass. C'mon,Who does not like the pleasing pallettes of pinks, reds, lace and hearts?

wooden valetnine
So this Valentine's day don't give your money to Hallmark give it to me and know that your gift was made by hand with love by a person whose name is Susan!

I have been working on  seriesof wooden valentines. these are flat wooden shapes with mixed media art work on them and ribbon or cord to hang them.

I have also been working on a series of hanging paper heart decorations made with misprinted repurposed papers.

So it is finally summer

I  have been struggling through this last few days of school with Bursitis in my hip I finally go in for the Cortisone shot today. I am not sure what this will  mean for the all the dance rehearsals and performances we have scheduled for the Tribal Goddess Collective. I have some art shows booked and will be teaching/ coordinating the summer camp at the art gallery starting this upcoming Monday. I really need to spend this weekend preparing. I have spent the last few days just trying to heal and laying on ice packs.

I have been working on a second etsy shop called Tribal Trends. Me and my fellow dance sisters are posting tribal dance accessories for sale in this shop.Above is one pair of the chandelier style beaded earrings I have been making for this new shop.

Zine and Craft fair reflections

So since fall 2010 I have been talking with Caitlin Holcombe and Ted Forsyth from the Flying Squirrel about doing the Fair again this year. We have emailed,,and emailed. We meet on Sundays discussing the event and following our creative tangents....We will hopefully do this again very soon. For a small indie craft show and four or five of us volunteering the little spare time we had I think we pulled off a pretty good show! We had artist venders, workshops and readings even face painters and food.

So here are some of the fliers we doctored up for the event. We had a coloring party were we colored them in. We took Dan's  loveable little yarn monster in many directions for this event. The yarn monster become Flava Flav, Harry Potter, A jester,  candidate for mayor. He really developed his own person.

Here are some pictures of the yarn monster puppet getting some love. That's Dan he had no idea what he started when he drew that little guy(he is also wearing a yarn monster button that KT made for the event.

Here Marylew and Ian snuggle the little baby yarn monster.

I made many wonderful new artist acquaintances.Several were up for trading art items for art items so although my sales were not overwhelming I made new connections with people and got to bring home some awesome art...

I was stationed upstairs at my Sculptresslink table and did a quick workshop on ATC's so there are many more awesome artists downstairs that I did not get to see too much of.
So now let me share with you just a few of the new artist acquaintances I made:

This is the JBird designs tables:She makes jewelry and very cool quilted patches with skulls, birds and bold abstract patterns.

I also spoke with Marylew and dug these little wands and rattles she makes. I love the crow magnets and I am so happy to have one on my cluttered fridge.

Here is the the lovely Nancy Toploski of Second Seed designs. Nancy was sitting next to the table for The Warehouse Arts.

The Warehousearts is a group of artists curently raising funds to purchase a warehouse space to by used as a collective artists work space, gallery space and, retail space to sell members artwork. We also hope to have shared facilities for glass, ceramics drawing and painting. As a member of  Warehouse arts I would like to thank everyone who purchased items to help us raise our goal please come back and support us at your Silent Auction on April 1, 2010 from 4-10.Here are Dan and Alysssa from Warehouse arts.
